What To Look For In a Pest Control Company

Hey there! It’s Sean again with LOCAL Bug Guy!
There are a lot of pest control companies out there knocking doors and trying to drum up business. We tried that once, but found out sales isn’t really our “thing.” We prefer to focus on really good service and education. So here we are writing blog posts instead.
Anyway, with so many pest control companies putting efforts into marketing and sales, it can be tough to know which companies actually walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
So here are some tips of what to look for when considering a new pest control company.

Are customers happy?
Reviews! Reviews, reviews, reviews!
I cannot stress how important it is that you read company reviews. If people are happy or mad about their pest control company, they’ll talk about it.
If a pest control company has anywhere below four stars on any review site, you’re better off finding someone else to take care of your pests. Four stars or more is probably okay. Four and half stars or more is solid. But anywhere below four stars… I wouldn’t trust them.
Some of the best places to check pest control company reviews are Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, and Reddit. Pay attention to what people are saying, especially those who are in your city or neighborhood. Big bug companies can have great branches in some locations and terrible branches in others. It really depends on the local manager.
Look at the service agreement
The pest control company should give you a detailed service agreement before you pay for anything. Read that thing from top to bottom and make sure you get clear answers. If you’re still left scratching your head after a sales guy explains it, that’s a red flag. Turn away.
The service agreement should set clear expectations on what services the pest control company provides in exchange for your hard-earned money. It should explain what pests they’re treating your house for, how often they’ll come by, and what fees are involved.
DO NOT SIGN if there’s anything unclear about the service agreement. You could get roped into a lengthy agreement that will cost you money if you try to cancel early.
Up-to-date licensing
Imagine getting an Uber or Lyft from someone who doesn’t even have their driver's license. Does it make you feel safe? Probably not.
Just like someone behind the wheel of a car, a pest control technician should have up-to-date licensing in Utah and California. This proves that they’ve been educated on the right ways to spray for pests while keeping you, your family, and your property safe.
Here is the link to check for pest control licensing in Utah. You can search by license number or business name. If a pest control company can’t give you its business license number, it’s not legit.
And here’s the link to check for pest control licensing in California. You can search according to the business name.
Other signs of a bad pest control company
Here are the honorable mentions in the realm of Stuff Sketchy Pest Control Companies Do. If a pest control company does any of these things, walk away.
Doesn’t provide clear pricing even after being asked direct questions
Pushy or aggressive sales tactics
No business address
Website looks old and is hard to navigate
Only takes cash as a payment
