Where cockroaches like to hide
Cockroaches like warm, dark, moist places that have close access to food and water. That makes your kitchen and bathrooms prime real estate.
In your kitchen, food is easy to find if it’s not stored properly. And there’s plenty of dark places to hide. Cockroaches might settle in your cupboards and under appliances, especially appliances that produce heat (like your oven) or appliances that might leak water (like your fridge or under your sink).
Let’s not forget bathrooms, though. Like your kitchen, bathrooms are prime places for moisture to gather. Under your sink is a popular spot because it’s dark and moist, especially if you have a small leak. Cockroaches might also get daring and venture to the bathtub or toilet.
Lastly, roaches will try to hide in commonly cluttered areas because they provide shelter. If you have a messy closet or furniture that sits low to the ground, those are places cockroaches will settle down.

How to keep cockroaches out
Some great steps you can’t take don’t cost any money—they just cost a little bit of your time.
Clean dirty dishes soon after use
Clean up any spills or messes quickly
Keep food properly stored and sealed
Make sure appliances and pipes aren’t leaking
If you can do the things above, it’ll make cockroaches less interested in your house! If they can’t find food or moisture easily, they’re more likely to take their business elsewhere.
Also, don’t forget about properly sealing doors and windows, especially during the cold months. Bugs—not just roaches—look for warm places to stay during the winter and fall, and if they can sneak into your house through a drafty door or window, they will. Make sure you check windows and doors for drafts.
Last, you should treat your home with a perimeter bug spray at least once every season. A store bought bug spray like Ortho Home Defense will go a long way. Make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle to create a protective barrier that will keep roaches out.
If you’re already dealing with a cockroach problem, consider products like a roach motel. These products draw roaches in using sugars and proteins, then traps them in a layer of sticky glue. Once the roach motel is full, just throw it out. Use these as many times as you need.
