Ants are one of the most common pests you’ll find around your home. You’re most likely to find them in your kitchen because they’re always on the hunt for their next snack.

What food attracts ants?
The simple answer is just about anything. Ants are omnivores, which means that they eat both plants and animals. Bread crumbs. Scraps of meat. Potato chips. They’ll snack on anything they can get their hands on as long as they can carry it and digest it.
You know what else are omnivores? Us. Humans. That’s why ants frequently make trips to your kitchen if they can. Our diets are very similar. If you don’t have your food properly stored or if you take too long to clean foodie messes and spills, they could be attracting ants.
There are some foods that ants like that we may not eat, though. These include leaves, fungus, pollen, and other insects. But it really depends on the species of ant. For the most part, common ants found in Utah and California are more likely to have similar diets to us and will hunt for crumbs of grains, vegetables, meat, and sugar.

How can I keep ants out of my house and food?
These are a few things you can do to keep ants out of your space.
Make sure your home and food are probably sealed. If you’ve got drafty doors or windows, old weather stripping, or frequently leave windows and doors open, you’re giving ants the green light to crawl into your house. From there, they’ll be on the hunt for any food they can find. Make sure your home is free from cracks, leaks, and drafts. And make sure all of your food is stored properly so ants can’t sense it.
Treat your home with an anti-ant insecticide. You can find these at most hardware stores. Ortho Home Defense or a similar product should be good for making an anti-ant barrier around the foundation of your home. You should spray it at least once per season, or as often as the packaging directs.
If you’ve already got ants, use traps. Terro traps are very effective for taking care of ant colonies by going right to the source. Ants will take bits of food from the Terro traps, but it’s toxic to them and their colonies. They’ll pass it around, get sick, and go the way of all the earth. No more ants.
