How Do You Get Rid of Ants When You Can’t Find the Source?

Hey, neighbor! It’s Sean with LOCAL Bug Guy.

Ants are easily one of the most common—if not the most common—pests you deal with in suburban America. Their diets are very similar to ours, which is what makes them want to break into your space and steal your crumbs.

Maybe you’ve got an ant issue right now, but you can’t find where they’re coming from. That’s a headache. Thankfully, the solution is simple. Let me break it down for you.

And if you’re thinking of letting a professional handle your ants, contact us at LOCAL Bug Guy! We specialize in common pests like ants and know all the best ways to handle them while keeping your family safe. Give us a holler for a free quote. It’s easy, fast, and zero-hassle.

Getting rid of ants when you can’t find the source

The best solution here is to use ant bait.

Ant bait looks and smells like food to ants. They can sense it from over 100 feet away. But it’s usually laced with poison that they’ll take back to their colony and pass around until they all get sick and die. Ta-da! No more ants.

Most of these bait stations are made for indoor settings, but you can also find some for outdoor settings if ants have been infesting your patio or porch. These outdoor bait stations are occasionally made like stakes that you can shove into an inconspicuous place in your yard. The ants will come get the bait from it, take it to their colonies, get sick, and die.

You can find ant bait at your local grocery store or hardware store, and they’re not too expensive. Brands like Raid and Terro create good products, and they typically cost less than what you would pay for a sandwich.

Here are a few products we recommend. And no, we don’t get any cut of the sale. These are just recommendations.

A word of caution

You’ve probably seen anti-insect spray used around the foundation of your home and corners of your interior—the kind of stuff like Ortho Home Defense. That’s good stuff! You should be using it at least once per season! It’s a great tool to use to prevent ants from coming into your house, but if you’re already finding ants in your house, do not use it yet!

If you spray the perimeter of your home with an anti-insect spray when you’ve been finding ants in your house, it could trap them inside. You’ll want to use ant bait first to get rid of the colony, then you’ll want to spray your home’s perimeter. Give it a few days after any signs of ants have disappeared.
