Why do spiders bite?

Simply put: they’re scared.

Spiders bite in self-defense. Just like you feel they’re intruding on your home, they feel like you’re threatening theirs, too. That’s when they try to chomp down on you. They’re trying to say, “Hey, stay away, or I’ll hurt you!”

It’s just like any other animal on earth. If it feels threatened, it’s going to run or fight back. You get a spider bite when it chooses “fight.”

Are spider bites dangerous?

For the vast majority of spiders you’ll find around your house, no. Indoor spiders are relatively harmless. If you get bit, you might get a little bump on your skin that will itch for a few days. But you probably won’t need to see a doctor or take any medication.

However, there is one exception. Black widows can have an extremely painful bite that will cause soreness and discomfort for days. If you’re in poor health, black widow bites can make you sick or, in the worst cases, kill you. It’s unlikely, but if you do get bitten by a black widow, it’s not a bad idea to see a doctor to get it looked at.

How can I better spider-proof my house?

The steps are simpler than you think. And these solutions are either cheap or free!

First, make sure your house is properly insulated. No drafty doors or windows. Make sure baseboards are caulked. It might take a few trips to your hardware store, but spiders are finding ways into your house through these small cracks and crevices. If you plug up the areas where they’re sneaking in, your house is going to help become spider-free.

Second, make sure you keep your house clean. Spiders love building their webs in cluttered nooks and crannies. Oh, and they also like building their webs in secluded corners and behind furniture. Make sure you clean and dust your home regularly so spiders never get too comfortable.

Third, apply some kind of pest control. You may be able to get by with a store bought spray like Ortho Home Defense. If you use this spray around the foundation of your house every season, along with around the edges of doors and windows, you’ll help create a protective barrier around your home that will shoo spiders away. Follow the instructions on the bottle to make sure you’re applying it right.
