So when should I spray for roaches?
If you’re handling treatment yourself, you should spray your home with a perimeter defense spray like Ortho Home Defense according to the directions on the bottle. Usually that’s every 8-12 weeks.
It’s important to maintain your protective pest control barrier because over time, the spray will become weaker. Things like rain, snow, hail, and other natural elements will wear down the protective barrier. And these are the times that roaches will try to sneak in—especially during seasons like fall and winter.

When to NOT spray for roaches
When you’ve found roaches in your house! I know. It may not make sense at first, but hear me out.
If you create a protective barrier around your home while roaches are inside your house, you might be trapping them inside! It isn’t hard for roaches to find places to hide in the walls or in cracks and crevices, and this gives them places to reproduce. You might be trapping yourself inside with an infestation! And an infestation is a lot harder (and more expensive) to get rid of.
Instead, while the problem is still mild to moderate, use roach motels to get rid of roaches that have made a home out of yours. Place them in areas where you’ve found roaches before, most likely your kitchen and bathrooms.
Roach motels are designed to attract roaches and trap them in a small space lined with glue so they can’t get out. Roaches go in, but they can’t come out. Once you’ve got a roach motel filled with the little buggers (yuck!), you can throw it away and spray the perimeter of your home.
Other preventative steps you can take
Keep your house clean. Roaches are attracted to things like rotting food, garbage, and dirty dishes. The less you leave these things out, the better. Get garbage cans with lids. Clean your dishes after using them. And for heaven’s sake, don’t let food or dirty dishes lay around the ground! That’ll make them easier for roaches to find!
Store your food properly. Along with the other things mentioned above, roaches are also attracted to sugars and carbs. Make sure you keep your food in properly sealed containers so they won’t attract creepy little critters.
Seal entry points. Got a drafty window? Are there small cracks in the exterior doors where light and air can seep through? You’ll want to get those sealed off. Roaches can squeeze through tiny cracks, so if they can find a way into your home, they’ll take it.
