Hey, friends! It’s Sean from LOCAL Bug Guy again!

So you’re wondering when the best times are to spray for bugs. The simple answer is that you should treat your home for pests year-round. Usually every 8-12 weeks.

The more complete answer is that some pests have busier seasons than others. There’s always some kind of pest that’s trying to make your home their home.

This post will give you tips on year-round care and what kind of pests you should keep a special eye on each season.

And as usual, contact LOCAL Bug Guy for a free quote if you’d like professionals to take care of your pests for you!

Overall Year-Round Care

The best time to spray for bugs overall is every 8-12 weeks. That’s every 2 to 3 months.

If you’d prefer a DIY solution, products like Ortho Home Defense do a good job creating a protective bug barrier around your home.

If you’d rather let a professional like LOCAL Bug Guy handle it, we spray your home once every 3 months. This gives the best balance between cost and effectiveness year round. This saves you time and energy so you can focus on other things, and we’ll come do a touch-up for free if you need.

Most of the time, these measures will guard your home well against ants, spiders, and other creepy crawlies. But there are some extra measures you can take each season to keep bugs at bay.

Seasonal Care

Spring

Spring is the time to be wary of wasps. Wasps will try to build nests on porches, under awnings, and sometimes under outdoor furniture. They’ve got their hard hats on, and they’re in building mode. Don’t let them become comfortable.

One thing you can do to shoo away wasps is to hang up decoy wasp nests around high-traffic outdoor areas. This could be your porch, your back patio, your pool, or your kid’s play area. Wasps are territorial, so if they see that another wasp colony has taken up residence, they’ll build elsewhere.

Summer

Summer is battle season for wasps. If they’re still building nests around your home despite your decoys, it might be time to suit up for battle.

A long-range wasp spray will do the trick, but be careful. If you’re too close to the nest when you spray, wasps will fight back. Stand as far away as your wasp spray will allow and spray down those wasp nests. That’ll teach them to encroach on your kingdom.

It also helps to wear long pants, a long shirt, gloves, and a mask if possible. If any wasps make it to you, they’ll have a harder time stinging you through your clothing.

Fall

In the fall, pests are looking for a warm place to hunker down for the winter. A lot of bugs also mate during the fall (gross) so they can lay eggs for the winter. These include spiders and wasps.

For spiders, make sure your home is consistently being sprayed around the foundation. Also spray under any outdoor fixtures where black widows can hide—these include patio furniture, kids toys, and barbecue grills.

For wasps, spray those nests. Use that long-distance wasp spray. Never give those angry little beasts a moment of peace. They’re actually more aggressive in the fall than they are in the summer, so be on attack mode.

Winter

Bugs want an escape from the cold, so you should still spray your home during the winter. This also helps maintain a moat around your castle so the bugs can't attack if we have an early spring. There are other ways of fortifying your house, too.

Make sure any drafts or cracks in windows and doors are sealed. These are spots where bugs love to crawl through. And not only will it help keep pests out, it’ll help you save on heating costs.

Some common winter pests are cockroaches. Make sure to keep that 8-12 week spraying schedule up and seal those cracks so you don’t find any roaches in your nice, clean home!
