Are there spiders around my house that can kill me?

Thankfully, the answer to this question is a big fat “probably not.” If you live in California and Utah, the most dangerous spiders you’re likely to encounter are black widows and brown recluses.

Make no mistake, black widows are no joke. If you get bitten by a black widow, it can be extremely painful and cause soreness for days. You might even want to see a doctor to get the bite checked out. But if you’re a healthy adult, you’re unlikely to die from a black widow bite. If you do have some health complications, though, black widow bites can be extremely dangerous. Please see a medical professional if you’re in poor health and you get bitten by a black widow.

Brown recluses are rare, but they’ve been spotted in California and Utah from time to time. Like black widows, brown recluse bites probably won’t kill you if you’re a healthy adult, but if your health is compromised, they can cause hemolytic anemia or kidney failure, which can kill you. Not to mention all the skin necrosis around the bite that may require surgery.

With the exception of the black widow and brown recluse, most common spiders near you are relatively harmless.

Spiders that can actually kill you

The good news is that some of the deadliest spiders in the world aren’t found in the United States. So you can sleep better at night with that knowledge. Just be careful if you’re planning a vacation to Australia or South America anytime soon.

The deadliest spider to humans is considered to be the Sydney Funnel-web Spider. These are found in Australia and have a bite so venomous it can attack your nervous system and kill you in less than an hour. These spiders are highly aggressive, too. If you get bitten, get medical attention immediately.

The Brazilian Wandering Spider is found in South America and is widely believed to be the most venomous spider in the world. A bite from a Brazilian Wandering Spider can cause intense pain, increased pulse, heightened blood pressure, and sometimes death.

The Redback Spider is similar to a black widow and can be found in Australia and Southeast Asia. A Redback Spider bite causes intense pain, sweating, nausea, headache, muscle twitching, and increased blood pressure. They’ve been deadly in the past, but thanks to an effective antivenom that’s been available since 1956, your chances of dying from them are low.
