The Most Venomous Spider on Earth
First of all, spiders aren’t poisonous—they’re venomous. The difference is that venom is injected while poison is ingested, inhaled, or absorbed. Venom is shot into your skin while poison is swallowed, breathed in, or on your skin for too long.
Because you’re probably wondering, the Sydney funnel-web spider is the world’s most venomous spider to humans. Males have a venom so potent it can have you pushing up daisies in a matter of minutes. That’s after its neurotoxin attacks your nervous system. Not a great way to go.
The good news is that you’ll only find this spider in Australia, particularly around the Sydney area. So you won’t have to worry about finding this in your attic or backyard. But if you’re planning a Sydney vacation soon, be careful!
The next section is for poisonous spiders you might find in your area.
Venomous Spiders You Might Find at Home
Black Widows
This is the obvious one. Black widow venom is rarely fatal, but it is not a good time. Black widow venom causes severe pain, spasms, and muscle cramps if you manage to get bit. If you do, you might want to visit a doctor, and at the very least, you could take some muscle relaxants and pain relievers to dull the pain you’ll experience for a few days.
What you can do about it. Prevention is key. Spray the exterior of your home with an insecticide like Ortho Home Defense at least once every season, and don’t forget areas like your garage and garden shed. Make sure to spray under outdoor toys, furniture, and other nooks and crannies where black widows might build their messy little webs. They prefer sheltered spots that are rarely above knee level.

Brown Widows
Brown widows are still venomous, but are generally less dangerous than black widows. They’re not as aggressive as black widows and their venom isn’t as potent, but you’ll still get some redness and swelling if you get bit. But brown widow bites aren’t as common because they prefer to run and play dead instead of picking a fight.
What you can do about it. Same with black widows, make sure you’re spraying your home regularly with an anti-spider insecticide. Ortho Home Defense works well. Spray the foundation of your home, then any corners or cluttered crannies where spiders may want to hide. Don’t forget your garage, attic, basement, and garden shed.
Wolf Spider
Wolf spiders are one of the creepiest looking spiders. They’ve got long hairy legs almost like a tarantula. But thankfully, their venom isn’t dangerous to humans. If you get bit, you’ll experience some pain and swelling, but it should go down on its own over time.
What you can do about it. Same as brown widows and black widows. Spray an anti-spider insecticide like Ortho Home Defense at least once every season. Don’t forget your garden shed and garage.
