Best all-around products

Ortho Home Defense is the gold standard of take-home pest control products. It’s pretty cheap and it does a good job if you’re consistent with it. Follow the instructions on the bottle carefully and set a reminder on your calendar to spray every 2-3 months.

The only issue you might have is depending on the size of your property, your hand might get tired from using the bottle’s little built-in spray nozzle. It’s a handy little product, but it can get tiresome lugging around a jug of pesticide and spraying hundreds of times. Make sure to give your hands a break to avoid cramping.

Best pest control products for ants

It really depends on the ant and where the ant is.

Ortho Home Defense is still a great option for most ants, but it works as a repellent. So if you’ve got ants inside your house and you spray Ortho around the outside of your house, you’ll trap the ants inside. Yikes.

With Argentine ants, about 5-10% of the population is queens, and these are the ones that do the foraging inside your house. Use a Terro ant bait product (borax and sugar water). These ants will take the bait back to their colonies, pass it around, and kill them on the spot. No more ants in your house.

But let’s talk about black widows for a second. They love to hide and build their nests under things, so you’ll need to spray your pesticide in these areas, not just your home’s foundation! Areas to look include trash cans (the big ones you take to the curb), around those trash can handles, underneath patio furniture, under bike seats, and around outdoor kids toys.

A black widow bite can be dangerous, so don’t miss these spots!

Best pest control products for earwigs and other crawling bugs

Spray the outside foundation of your home with that Ortho Home Defense. Earwigs tend to get into your house from outdoor crevices and cracks, so this will stop them in their tracks.

Best pest control products for wasps

For prevention, consider a fake wasp nest. You can get these for a low cost on Amazon and should do the trick most of the time. Wasps are territorial, so if they see another nest nearby, they’ll take their business elsewhere.

Standard pesticides like Ortho Home Defense and a Spectracide wasp killer can be great, but it can be tough to spray the areas where wasps usually build their nests. These are usually inside corners of patios, awnings, inside bird houses—anywhere covered and secluded.

If you plan on going to battle with a wasp nest, get a long-range wasp killer spray and armor up with long sleeves, long pants, gloves, shoes, and something to cover your head. Wasp stings hurt, and you don’t want an entire colony to come after you.
