A Quick Note…
We aren’t getting compensated for the links in this article. These are just products we recommend and where you can probably expect to find them.
Also, make sure you always follow the instructions on the pest control product! The instructions will tell you where, when, and how often to use it. If you go against the instructions, the product might not work right, or worse, it could hurt you. So read those labels before you use anything!
Basic Pest Control
You can get an insect swatter for a couple of bucks at any grocery store, but you probably don’t want to hunt down these little critters individually.
A product like Ortho Home Defense is a great all-around spray to use around your home every 8-12 weeks. At the time of this writing, a bottle of Ortho Home Defense will cost you about $10 at a typical chain grocery store like Walmart. You may be able to get multiple applications from one bottle, but we recommend using the whole thing to get the most effective treatment.

Specific Pests
Ants
A regular 8-12 week spray with a product like Ortho Home Defense will do a good job protecting your home from ants. This product usually costs around $10 at most grocery stores depending on where you live. Terro traps also work well because ants take the bait back to their colonies and pass it around. These usually start around $5.
Spiders
Once again, you’re going to have good luck with a regular spraying of Ortho Home Defense or a similar product that you can find for around $10 at a grocery store. Make sure with spiders that you spray the product under outdoor furniture and toys, though. Spiders like black widows like to build their webs in little hiding places like that.
Cockroaches
Ortho Home Defense or a similar product will do a good job at keeping cockroaches at bay. This spray starts at about $10 at most grocery stores. Roach motels are also a great monitoring option for roaches.
Wasps
Okay, with wasps, you’ll want a long distance wasp spray like Hot Shot or Raid. You can find a can of this for around $5 to $10 at most grocery stores. These sprays have a long spray so you can stand back several yards to spray a wasp nest. If it’s spring and wasps haven’t built their nests yet, try decoy wasp nests to tell wasps, “Hey, this spot is taken.” You can get packs on Amazon for as little as $10, but they go up in price depending on the materials.
Earwigs
Like with spiders and ants, you can use Ortho Home Defense or a similar product to create a protective barrier around your home. Expect to pay somewhere around $10 at the starting end of the price range.
What About Hiring a Professional?
If it’s in your budget to let a professional handle it, that’s the best way to go. Although a pro will cost more money, you’ll get expert advice on every pest they handle and their products will be applied by experienced hands.
